Guidance for Confirmation in light of Covid-19

Arrival at the Church

  • Members of the same household should enter the church together. There is a limit of 4 per family including the child for Confirmation. (Ceremony live-streamed on https://sligocathedral.ie/live-feed-from-cathedral/)
  • They should then occupy their assigned seats. The child and sponsor are seated in the centre aisle (places will be allocated alphabetically by first name) with the household seat directly across on the side aisles. They should observe physical distancing at all times; before, during and after the ceremony.
  • Any person who may be more vulnerable to the Covid-19 virus is strongly advised not to attend the ceremony.
  • The total number present should not exceed the maximum number allowed under public health guidelines.

The Ceremony

  • Parish or school choirs should not be present at the liturgy; music can be provided by an organist and a soloist. Tomás Ó Gabháin will supply musical accompaniment for the ceremony.
  • Under the present circumstances, candidates will not be invited to come into the sanctuary area to express a Word of Welcome, do the Readings from Scripture or Prayers of the Faithful.
  • Candidates should sit at the end of the pew nearest the aisle. They should remain in their seat throughout the ceremony. The celebrant will come to confirm them in their place, with a household member acting as sponsor or by proxy for another relative or friend.
  • To avoid any possibility of contamination, gifts and symbols will not be brought to the Altar nor should anybody come forward to read a reflection

Administration of the Sacrament

  • The celebrant should be provided with a small tray on which there will be: one dish with cotton buds and one empty dish for used cotton buds after anointing. A suitable small container with the Oil of Chrism should also be on this tray. The used cotton buds are carefully disposed of in a sealed plastic bag.
  • The priest(s) of the parish should remain in the Sanctuary (and the teachers if they are present, in their seats) while the celebrant administers the Sacrament.
  • The candidates should hold their Confirmation cards in their hands, with their name and Confirmation name written clearly on it.
  • The candidates should stand to receive the Sacrament and sit afterwards.

Photography

  • Mobile phones, iPads or cameras should not be used during the ceremony.
  • Group photographs are suspended at this time.
  • Family photographs may be taken, outdoors only.
  • If the celebrant is invited into a family photograph, he must maintain physical distancing, as he is not a member of the same household.

Exiting the Church

  • Stewards should arrange for the orderly exit from the church, household by household, seat by seat.
  • Physical distancing should be observed in the grounds of the church at all times.

Microphones

  • Separate microphones should be used if possible, but a supply of surface wipes should be provided for all and used between readers.
